New Hobbit-Themed MTG Bonus Cards Reprint Dubiously Valuable Staples

Share

While the switch to limited-run Secret Lair drops is still a sore spot for many players, the improvement in shipping speed is undeniable. The Hobbit-themed Marvelous Mathoms Superdrop, for instance, was only launched on the 17th, yet we’re already seeing new bonus cards from it. Sadly, while these bonus cards have arrived rather quickly, they’re not exactly the most exciting reprints in the world.

Judging by the art for these new reprints, each Marvelous Mathoms drop has a unique fixed bonus card. Naturally, this is good news for MTG players who like the art of a specific drop and just want more cards in that style. From a value perspective, however, only one of these cards, Slip Out the Back, has a compelling raw reprint value.

Selling for around $5 on average, Slip Out the Back is a pretty solid reprint that sees steady Commander play. Appearing in around 136,000 decks, this card is a fantastic piece of removal, and the new variant is absolutely incredible. Thanks to the unique art and foiling technique, this variant could have a huge Secret Lair tax, especially since the He Who Walks Unseen drop is $60.

Sadly, after this surprisingly heavy hitter, prices fall off an absolute cliff, as Plumb the Forbidden is only $0.38. After being reprinted in a couple of recent Commander decks, this draw spell isn’t much to write home about nowadays. Since this card hasn’t had a Secret Lair printing before, it’s unclear how much this metal-inspired variant might sell for, too.

Thankfully, while they do have awful raw reprint value, both Rogue’s Passage and Wayfarer’s Bauble aren’t totally terrible. Past Secret Lair printings for these cards have sold for at least $3.90 and $4.20, respectively. Admittedly, these aren’t huge price tags, but as Commander super staples, there will always be demand for nice variants.

Supplies Still Last

Should you like the look of these Marvelous Mathoms Secret Lair bonus cards, the good news is that you can still pick them up. So far, only the Second Breakfast and Beyond drop, as well as the Foil Desolation drop, have sold out. This means that MTG players can now make more informed Secret Lair purchasing decisions, albeit ones with less of a fun surprise.

If none of these Secret Lair drops interest you, however, it won’t be long before we’re bombarded with even more. On August 31st, the Perfectly Normal Superdrop will launch, bringing a bunch of Marvel-themed drops, among others. A couple of weeks after this, there’s also the Masters of the Universe-themed Superdrop launching on September 14th.
